Vaishnava Tantric Bauls of Birbhum Bengal India

1/30/2011

Babu Kishan aka Krishnendu Das Website
Nobel prized great poet Rabindranath Tagore was inspired by Baul Music and their philosophy. From Shri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu to America's poet Allen Ginsberg, Beatles, Rollingstone, Bob Dylan, Mahalia Jackson, Gandhiji, Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Osho and many more were inspired by Bauls Of Bengal.

(The truth is and is well known in Bengal Sri Nityananda Baul inspired , Sir Chaitanya and gave him the Mahamantra, Hare krishna song and dance.) Baul is an oral tradition and so much has been distorted over time.

Subodh Mitra's 1955 classic oldie Bengali movie Raikamal, was filmed on Nabani Das Baul Babu's grandfather who raised him until he was 8. If a movie is made about you in India in 1955 you can guess that Sri Nabani Das Baul was a figure of importance, a legendary person.

In fact Sri Nabani Das was the guru of many Bengali's of the time, he was Baul Guru of the famous poet Rabindranath Tagore. Nabani Das was a Vaishnava Baul but also a very accomplished Kali Sadhaka at Tarapith, to this day Babu is on the board of Tarapith.

The Hindi movie Hansraj was based on the life of his father, Purna Das Baul in 1985.   Raikamal (Bengali, 1955) is adapted from a story by  the famous Bengali author Tarashankar Banerjee it starred Uttam Kumar, Kaberi Bose, Nitish Mukherjee, Sabitri Chatterjee, Chandrabati Devi, Jiben Bose, Namita Sinha and others with music directed by Pankaj Mullick..

The eminent US poet Allen Ginsberg holds a prominent role in the exposure of  Baul song at the world stage. The poet on his visit to Shantiniketan, heard Nabani Das sing and his instantly fell in love with the baul music and Nabani Das became his Guru. He wrote about Nabani Das Baul in the New York Times.

Babu became friends and visited Allen Ginsberg over decades in New York before he passed away. Allen even wrote a song for Babu, the only piece of Baul poetry Ginsberg ever wrote.

Years later, when the organizers of Woodstock Music Festival decided to represent world music, they invited Pundit Ravi Shankar from India. Ginsberg suggested to the Woodstock organizers to invite Nabani Das, praising him as the eighth wonder of the world.

As the opportunity of performing in foreign shores presented itself, Sri Nabani Das Baul humbly declined the offer and instead sent his two sons to represent baul music on the world stage, thus Purna Das Baul and Luxman Das Baul traveled to Woodstock, they stayed at Albert Grossman's place in Woodstock for months and preformed at Woodstock. Not much is reported about this because they went back to India, where as Ravi Shankar stayed in America, so did Swami Satchitananda.

Babu got the new name Babu Kishan from the Indian Bollywood Cinema Directors Sooraj Salim and Mahesh Bhatt  they gave him the name Babu Kishan as they found it difficult to pronounce “Krishnendu”, they started to call him Babu Kishan and that was fine with him as he had left his family in Bengal and was starting over in Bombay.

This is the time he started with RD Burman and ended up spending 13 years of association with one of Bollywood's  legendary Music Composers. Babu followed in RD Burmans footsteps composing over 150 musical scores and 60 albums, and was awarded the most promising young composers of the 1990's.

Babu is an award winning music composer both in Bengal, he was composing music for his parents on HMV when he was 10 years old, he was a famous poet from age 8... and many of his poems were published in Calcutta under other names, including Krishnendu, he is a musical and poetic genius... and legendary Baul of his lineage.

Sri Nabani Das Baul is a Gosai, Goswami but took this name off of his name as he did not want anybody to touch his feet, he believed you should worship yourself... however, they are from a brahmin family going back thousands of years, and they do speak sanskrit, but they are Baul, freebirds, free from rules and regulations

A rare Baul, Making History.. Babukishan aka Krishnendu Das Baul

A Rare Baul! Making history.

Babu is the only Baul to live in all of North and South America or perhaps outside of India that is from this ancient oral Living lineage. He is probably one of the only Bauls to live outside of India for an extended period of time.. There are perhaps one of two others who have said they were Baul but were not...

Babukishan aka Krishnendu Das Baul is the first Baul to be educated, with a BA and MA in Indian Music, the first Baul to travel the world for 40 years of his generation, the first Baul to be a music composer in Bollywood film, the first and only Baul to live in Canada! He is the only representative of his lineage outside of India.

Not an easy task...he just keeps walking... and I wonder how people will ever learn the truth about his lineage, by one man walking along... singing and dancing his way to preserve his lineage.

We need all the support and love that grace can provide. He truly is a one man show for decades.

Makara Sanskranti and what it means to the Bauls of Bengal.. "The Joydev Mela." the changing times!

1/14/2011

Picture
It is Makara Sanskranti when the Sun enters Capricorn, considered to be the beginning of spring all over India. In West Bengal the Baul festival called JoyDev Mela takes place in Kenduli. They worship the Gita Govinda written by the poet JayaDeva in Sanskrit, the Bauls consider Jayadeva to be one of their own.

Surya is reminding us  'Tamaso Ma Jyotir Gamaya', may you go higher & higher, to more & more Light and never to Darkness. The Sun stands for knowledge, spiritual light and wisdom, let us work towards truth and equality.

Regarding the Joydev Mela that starts on Makara Sanskranti  "in recent years, the greatest baul fair is gradually losing its character, as the Bauls have been out numbered by kirtanias, who perform in the mela to gain popularity. In 2008, around 2,000 kirtanias came to attend the mela and they obtained contracts worth Rs. 2 crore." The problem with this is that this is a place of worship by the Bauls, this is where they would come to talk philosophy, to sing. Now it is turning into a place of commerce, like all things.. The problem being Bauls are very poor, their singing is not generally commercial, and this is causing them to suffer even further because attention is being drawn away from their tradition, I guess in some ways you can say this is happening all over the world with indigenous people. There is unacceptable behavior being perpetuated in the name of Baul. Their voices are not being heard, they are sweet gentle people.

The Bauls are really having a difficult time, they are being pushed out, and are near extinction...

I have been noticing writers of Kirtan rewriting history, now leaving Sri Nityananda out of the story ??

Sri Nityananda who was a Baul was also a scholar in the oral tradition of sanskrit transmission.

Nityananda was Sri Chaitanya's best friend.. Sri Chaitanya was known as Sri Krishna and Sri Nityananda was known as his brother Balaram, now the story has been changed and is changing due to what is popular. I suggest that one thinks about this when reading any articles or stories or books on Kirtan.

Why is has Sri Nityananda been left out of the story..?? Sri Nityananda was the Bhakti Mystic, an Avadhuta...he was a Baul. One particular writer should not change the story by leaving out one of the most important characters of the story, Sri Nityananda. There has already been so much distortion, the story changes every year to something else.

Sri Nityananda is in all the pictures with Sri Chaitanya how can anybody leave him out of writings about kirtan??... how do you explain that??

Nityananda was from a Brahmin family who had been singing the Hare Krishna mantra for thousands of years in the oral tradition of kritan... You can not change the story to suit ones own choice...

Sri Chaitanya may be the father of modern kirtan, however, Sri Nityananda should never be left out because he is the father of all fathers of Kirtan in Bengal from an ancient oral living lineage.... it does not do anybody any service to call the Bauls names or to rewrite history, there is no room for politics in love.. only love..

By the way there are mothers of Kirtan from Bengal also, I will write about those great Ma's sometime in the future. We must not forget Herstory...Jai ma

(Nitai Pada Kamala)

 by Sri Narottama Das Baul

(He also was a Baul, this Thakur when used in the Bhakti tradition coming out of Bengal...Thakur as a tag name is a modern creation used to replace Baul to cancel out the Bauls....to distort the Facts, when you see Das or Dasi... it is always Baul after, especially when it comes to Narottama Das Baul .. Das and Dasi in regards to most names coming out of the Bhakti movement in Bengal are usually related to Baul, there are a few exceptions.)

Translation

The lotus feet of Lord Nityananda are a shelter that soothes with the light of millions of moons. Their shade brings solace to the universe. O brother, without Sri Nitai, approaching Radha-Krishna is impossible. Catch hold of the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda and join Their dance!

A person who has not established his relationship with Nityananda Prabhu has wasted his life and is no better than an animal. Because he has never uttered the holy name of Nityananda, he has been absorbed with so-called material “happiness.” What can his useless education and family tradition do to help him?

With false prestige and identification with the body, one is thinking, “Oh, what is Nityananda? What can He do for me? I don’t care.” But he is not accepting the truth. To approach Radha-Krishna, first achieve the mercy of Lord Nityananda. Grasp the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda, which are not illusion; they are a fact. Engage His transcendental loving service and become transcendental. Catch the lotus feet of Lord Nityananda! I, Narottama dasa, am miserable and am praying to Lord Nityananda to make me blissful. My dear Lord, please keep me close to Your lotus feet!

Happy first day of spring.

Please don't believe everything you read.. May the sun enlighten all..

Hare Krishna

Hari is the lover of love, if there is no love Hari is not there... that means love for all, big and small, everybody, everything.

The Baul way of Life, Lineage Baul instruments!!

The Baul way of Life, Lineage Baul instruments!!

Bauls are India wandering spiritual minstrels of West Bengal whose ecstatic songs and dance reflect their joy, love and longing for mystical union with the Divine. To them the human body is the holiest of holies wherein the Divine is intimately enshrined as the "Moner Manush",the person of the heart. Baul philosophy emphasises love for all human beings as the path leading to the Divine Love. Romantic love to the Baul is the link between the human being and God. In fact, they believe that God is the eternal lover of the eternal woman which is the human soul. The word "Baul" is derived from the Sanskrit word "Baul" which means "mad". Bauls are free thinkers who openly declare themselves to be mad for the God who dwells within us all. Among others, Bauls use the following instruments:

1. TABLA - the high drum.

2. BAYA - the bass drum: commonly known as a set of TABLAS. Capable of a myriad of different sounds and tonal combinations, these are the most popular drums of North Indian classical music.

3. EKTARA - literally "one string". This one string drone instrument is used to accompany singers into he folk traditions of many regions of India. In addition to plucking the strings, the skin head is also struck like a drum to provide rhythm accompaniment.

4. GUNGAROO - these ankle bells add to the orchestration as a singer plucks and beats his ektar, creating a kind of one-man-band effect. Classical dancers use a much heavier set of gungaroos with many more bells to create startling rythmic counterpoints to the slapping of their feet against the floor.

5. DOTARA - a folk instrument much like it's classical cousin, the sarode, and not unlike it's western relative, the fretless banjo. Plucked with a coconut shell pick, the strings are depressed with the fingernails of the left hand, rather than the finger pads as in a guitar or violin. the finger nail becomes like the slide on a slide guitar. My dotar has an electric pickup built into the bridge, which is normally made of elephant teeth, I am the first Baul to do fusion music, then I made an electric mandolin, and added more instruments...

"The first Dotara used by Bauls was by Gopal Das Baul in the early 1940's he was the husband of Radharani Dasi Baul ( Babu's aunt who was the biggest most famous Baul women ever.)  Gopal Das Baul was the disciple of Nabani Das Baul. Nabani asked what Gopal wanted because he was such a wonderful student, of all my students you are the best, and Gopal said I want to marry your daughter, Radharani, he said allow me to be in your family and take care of Radharani all my life.. Gopal Das was pure Vaishnava, a true sadhaka.
Radharani was the first official Baul to record for all India Radio... In 1960's there was movied call Raikamal made about Radharani's life, wrote by one of Bengali's top writers, Tara Shankar. In 1985 a movie called Togori was also made about Radharani's life.. A very historic family Lineage of Bauls....

Gopal Das was the son of the Ekchakra Nityananda Temple, and he was a great sweet maker. Nityananda Mahaprabu was a Baul and from this lineage."

6. CHIMTAS - combination rhythm instrument fire tongs, and weapon used by Sadhus (wandering mendicants all over India). Sri Nabani carried this because he was a ardent wandering Sadhu.

7. HARMONIUM - portable pump organ, introduced to India by the missionaries, this little reed organ has become one of India's most popular instruments, perfect for 2 finger typists like myself - the left hand pumps the bellows while the right hand plays the keys. Babu's mother Manju Das Baul introduced the Harmonium as a Baul instrument, she played the Harmonium all over the world during her 0ver 50 years of traveling the world with her husband Purna Das Baul and her son Babukishan Das Baul. They played at places in London like the Royal Albert Hall, South Hall, Hyde Park, Carnegie Hall in New York.

8. KANJIRA - small frame drum. Used by both folk and classical musicians. This one has a goat skin head, but usually the head is made from a lizard skin.

9. KARTALS - finger cymbals. Great for making a lot of noise while singing Kirtan (chanting the names of God).

10. SMALLER KARTALS - for the quieter moments.

11. GUBGUBBI- (also known as Khammak) - an inverted bongo drum with two gut strings attached from the inside of the hide to the membrane on a small cup. You put the bongo drum under your arm, pull on the cup and pluck the strings. This is the most popular instrument of the Bauls of Bengal. It's also called "anandalahari" - waves of bliss. The name Ananda Lahari was a name given by Sri Nabani Das Baul, (Babu's grandfather.)

12. GOPI CHAND Yantra- this one string instrument allows you to change the pitch by squeezing the bamboo sides. The tighter you squeeze, the lower the note gets, until the instrument breaks and you have to get a new one at the corner gopi chand store. The name Gopi Chand came from Babu's lineage, The Vaishnava Lineage Bauls of Bengal.13. DHOLAK - 2 headed barrel shaped drum popular in all sorts of Indian folk music.
