It is my thought there is very little respect when it comes to the ancient teaching and wisdom of another time and place.
Respect does not mean being blind and throwing discernment out the window, if you have respect you will do more research and dig even deeper to qualify what you are taught. It means you come up with great questions to show you have practiced and down research into the subject being taught, respect to your teacher to show you are doing the work and each question has been carefully thought out not just randomly asked because you are lazy.
Respect is an understanding that the teacher has given all of their life in time, energy and practice to maintain the magic art and science of what they are teaching. Respect is acknowledging there is value in what the teacher is teaching.
Respect does not mean stupidity in allowing bad behaviour, Respect is mutual. You give RESPECT you get RESPECT in return. Never all any type of abuse, know your boundaries, respect is using your discernment, do not throw your intellect, or intuition out of the window. Respect is NOT blind or ignorant.
To bow is respect for the gift that the giver is bestowing on us, a simple acknowledgement is sufficient, a simple namaste of putting your hand together or a nod of the head or smile, simple politeness is perfect. To over show is not necessary and is to be discouraged. We are here in the west there really is no need to do extreme displays of respect and sometimes less is better.
Grace comes through the lineage.
To reach deeper and deeper levels you must be worthy, there are divine beings watching on the subtle levels, when you enter the Masters space you are automatically being watched on the subtle level. I realize most of the people teaching yoga are not Masters, they are teaching fitness classes, so I would say just friendly respect, the kind of respect you would have for everybody and everything.
There is a difference between a master and a regular person, these distinctions need to be made. Practice by treating everybody with respect, animals, trees, flowers, yourself and all that you meet love all, respect all, serve all in your capacity to do so.
Below is an outline of Respect when receiving teaching from a lineage teacher, Master, or sacred teachings.

RESPECT!
٭ Bow to Shifu when entering and leaving the training hall!
٭ If you are late for class, bow to join in. If you need to leave
early, tell your Instructor! This also applies to instructors who are taking classes!
٭ If you know you will be missing classes, tell your instructors in
advance.
Don’t just disappear!
٭ Help to keep the school clean & tidy – when you see something that needs doing, DO IT!
٭ Have Respect for all, including yourself.
Your martial arts training hall is a School and a
Family! Endeavour to Help and Love each other.
(As Shifu says: Respect from each other, Help from each other, Love
from each other.)
٭ Be Humble. Be Kind. Be Patient.
٭ Be open to learning, (to the teachings) and keep a positive attitude.
٭ Always try and do your best.
٭ Strive to do better, to improve, to be more successful - Persevere.
٭ Cultivate Virtue: Morality, Righteousness, Honesty, Trust, Loyalty, Courage, …
٭ Be a good person. Lead by Example!
٭ Any problems (physical, financial, emotional…) – tell
Instructor/Shifu – feel free to talk.
٭ When watching other Students and Instructors - Individuals, please
keep in mind:
Basics & Principles are the same – flavour, preference & understanding
may be different.
٭ ٭ ٭ ALWAYS BE RESPECTFU!!! ٭ ٭ ٭
