Makar Sanskranti is when the Sun (Surya) enters Capricorn (Makar) It has nothing to do with the winter solstice Dec 21 it is not a mistake.

Makra Sanskranti ganita is calculated from Surya Kala, when the Sun is in Capricon Period.. there is a reason for this and it has to do with the sangam in Allahabad, do you think they hold the Kumbha Mela by accident at this time of the year, there is always a reason, a scientific reason for this....

Makar Sanskranti has nothing to do with the Winter Solstice.. and Indian Astrology is not an off shoot of tropical western astrology.. One needs a Guru in Jyotisha it is not something learned from books and boxed in a western mind of one word translation from ancient sanskrit in where one word equals a universe of teachings. Look at the scale of the earth to the sun.. it is not comparable. There are many levels and layers not even understood here in the west.. do not take any book translation as literal.

Makara Sanskranti is calculated from Surya, when Surya specifically enters Capricorn 'Period'. not when the sun is in Sagitarius or how we would like to fit the Indian ways into a box to fit our western brain. There is not mistake and herein lies the problem of trying to compare apples to turnips.. Do not get your information from Wikipedia when it comes to learning Jyotisha.

SURYA NAMASHKAR.

Salutation to Lord Surya, The Sun God; the giver of light, energy and self-vitalization. Surya Namashkar is always performed in the open air at sunrise. One prostrates towards the direction of appearance of the Sun chanting hymns of praise of the Sun. This is to request Surya to bestow blessings on us. ‘Argyam’ is water offering for Surya during daily ritual of ‘sandyavadanam.’ Each of the following mantras relate to a particular yogasana posture.

GAYATHRI MANTRA

The supreme Gayathri mantra is a prayer to the "giver of light and life" - the sun (savitur). One should chant the Gayatri everyday, morning, afternoon and evening. These are referred to as Praathah Sandhya, Maadhyahna Sandhya and Saayam Sandhya. When you show your back to the sun, your shadow will be ahead of you. It will fall behind you only when you stand facing the sun. Similarly, Maya or illusion, which is like your shadow, will overtake you when you turn your mind away from God. It can be overcome only when you turn your mind towards God.

Om Bhur Bhuva Suvah
Tat Savithur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya Dheemahi
Dhiyo Yonah Prachodayat
Meaning: Oh God! Thou art the Giver of Life, Remover of pain and sorrow, The Bestower of happiness, Oh! Creator of the Universe, May we receive thy supreme sin-destroying light, May Thou guide our intellect in the right direction. May you have a pleasant day ahead. Be kind and loving. Om --

LAKSHMI SADHANA AND ASTROLOGY. From an astrological point of view, Dhana Yoga or Laxmi Yoga are said to decide your financial and social standing. This yoga provides a person with wealth and fame. Lakshmi, which is considered as a Goddess of wealth in Hindu mythology, brings the same impact with the Yoga of her name. According to astrology, days and nights are divided into 12 signs, and every living being is born under one of them. Each sign has its specific impacts. There are nine goddesses associated with these planets. Similarly, there are nine avatars of Goddess Lakshmi, one associated with each planet. All the nine avatars of Lakshmi are worshipped.

SURYA (Sun) Lakshmi: Positive impact is plenty of wealth by genuine means, while negative impact includes wealth procured in a dishonest way.

CHANDRA (Moon) Lakshmi: Positive effect is good health, while negative influence includes ill-health

MANGAL (Mars) Lakshmi: If the planet favours you, success will come easy, and if you are not blessed, you may be overwhelmed by a string of collapses.

BUDDHA (Mercury) Lakshmi: With the help of Mercury, you can achieve gold medals in school and college; otherwise, you will have to be satisfied with just a consolatory result.

GURU (Jupiter) Lakshmi: Blessings of Jupiter include begetting well-mannered children. However, if Jupiter is angry at you, you may have children with no virtues.

SHUKRA (Venus) Lakshmi: If you want a good wife, worship Venus; but the evil eye of Venus may give you just the opposite – a wicked wife.

SHANI (Saturn) Lakshmi: Positive impact brings plenty of wealth earned by genuine means, while negative impact includes wealth procured in dishonest ways.

RAHU Lakshmi: If Rahu smiles at you, you will have good friends; but a single venomous glance from Rahu can spoil your life as you will be surrounded by liars and cheats.

KETU Lakshmi: A humble Ketu can give you fame, while a cruel one can bring blasphemy.

MANTRA: ”Om Hreem Ashtalakshmeya Daridraya Vinashini Sarvasukha Smruddhi Dehi Dehi Hreem Om Namah!!”

Lakshmi Mantra associated with each Rashi:

Aries: Om Aem Kleem Saun
Taurus: Om Aem Kleem Shri
Gemini: Om Kleem Aem Saun
Cancer: Om Aem Kleem Shri
Leo: Om Hreem Shreem Saun
Virgo: Om Shree Aem Om
Libra: Om Hreem Kleem Shree
Scorpio: Om Aem Kleem Saun
Sagittarius: Om Hreem Kleem Saun
Capricorn: Om Aem Kleem Hreem Shree Saun
Aquarius: Om Hreem Aem Kleem Shree
Pisces: Om Hreem Kleem Saun

    My Musings:
    by Trishula Das

Jyotisha also called Vedic Astrology, and Indian Astrology, it is an ancient science and art. Jyotisha is the astrology of  Yoga, Tantra, Ayurveda, Sanskrit, Indian Culture and Indian Philosophy,  if one cuts the roots off the tree will die. Jyotisha is the eyes of the Veda's, Upanishads, Puranas and Tantra's...

If one is a sincere student of  Yoga, and Tantra it is a must to practice Jyotisha also..  Yoga is not just about physical exercise.. it is a deep study that takes many years of intellectual study before one teaches...

From Various Authors.... and many by Yogi Ananda Saraswathi .
You can read more at  https://www.facebook.com/yogi.anandasaraswathi

Jyotisha is a holistic sacred healing system, it must be helpful. Jyotisha is a Tantra that is the study of karma and time. A practical mystical tool and practice. It is used to remove obstacles and to undestand who we are in the universe, what will be our dharma, how we will make money, and enjoy this life which hopefully will lead to moksha or freedom, it deals with all aspects of life.

Jyotish was revealed to the Rishi's in order to set the  prisoners free not to hold them hostage to their karma's or enslave the individual to what is seen as malific in a chart. It was never meant to be fatalistic.  Yes we have fate and free will and there is a remedy for every problem, Grace of God or Goddess is the biggest remedy. There is always hope we always need to try and fight our way.

A Jyotishi is a guide a seer and points the way, a Jyotishi never traps anybody by giving a fatalistic negative reading making people feel hopeless and in despair. The earth is the place of suffering a Jyotishi's gift is to find a solution to bring light to the situation. Thus Jyotish is the science and art of Light.

Jyotish is about understanding the bigger questions a Yogi or Yogini asks, Why am I here?? What is going on and what is next??  How do I proceed?

Jyotish is about understanding Purusha (consciousness) and Prakriti (phenomenal realm of matter) how it is all woven together? Jyotish is a Tantra a technique.

Jyotish is a sadhana it keeps the mind awake and aware and with the help of Lord Ganesha it helps us categorize life into a workable deeper understanding.
