Tantra are the techniques of India relating to Indian Ritual, Music, to every part of all topics that come out of India. Jyotish is a enormous study that takes at least 7 lifetimes to master.
One part of Jyotish is the Panchanga relating to the phases of the moon, or lunar calendar. This is the moons path through the stars inspired these measurements as it travel through the skies. Each Nakshatra has its own unique shakti, power to accomplish something.
The PANCHANGA (5 limbs, OR parts), Panch (5), and Anga limbs or categories. Remember Jyotish is ruled by the Lord of Categories Ganesha wh puts everything into it proper category. The Panchanga is the mearsurements of time that define the India calendar.
1.) Varana - the days of the week which is all very mathematical and has great signifigance of how the seven planets are rulers of each days of the week. Rahu and ketu the nodes of the moon do not actually own land or a planet, they are shape shifters and act like the planets for Graha's that they sit with.. they take on the characteristics of the planet they associate with, thus the term, 'you become who you associate with, so becareful who you associate with'
2.) nakshatra, 27 lunar mansions or house that the moon travels through on a daily basis, each night they move to another nakshatra. The information of the Nakshatra's comes from the Krishna Yajur Veda, and the Taittrey Brahmana. Each constelation covers 3 Nakshatra's and they are classified into the 3 gunas or qualities, Activities such as Active, Passie and balanced, Caste including Brahman, Kshatriya, Vaisya, Shudra. Directions Upward, downward, level. Gender, male, female and neuter. Kapha, Pitta, Vata. Nature including fixed, moveable, the sharp or dreadful, soft mild or tender, sharp and soft, fierce or severe, light. Sexual type ie) horse, elephant, sheep, serpant there are 27. Species Devata, Manjshya, Rakshasa. The mahabhuta's earth, Air Water fire ether. The nakshatra's are quite complex and they each have a devata asigned and mystical stories that go along with each Nakshatra this in itself is a lifetime study. Nakshatra's are unique to Jyotish or Vedic or Indian Astrology.
3.) Tithi, there are 30 (phases) different tithi's given to the Moon (Chandra) - 15 called Shukula Pakasha or bright waxing moon phases leading to a full bright moon and there 15 phases or tithi's of the moon going from full moon to dark moon called Krishna Paksha. The left nostril relates to the Shukula Paksha the 15 days leading from dark moon to full moon. The right nostril or solar channel related to Krishna Paksha the moon's phases going from Full moon to Dark moon or Krishna Paksha. In this one can make a correlation of the inter-relationship between Yoga, Ayurveda and why I alwayys say if you want to be a yogi or tantric learn Jyotish and Ayurveda.
Each of these Tithi's has a name and a meaning/ these names are for both 15 sets of the moon going from 1 to 15 of the waxing or waning moon.
15th tithi of the full moon is called Purnima
30th tithi of Dark moon is called Amavasya
4) Karanas - The lunar day is divide into 2 karana's of 6 degree's each equaling 11 different karana's that recycle around to total 64 karana's for a lunar month. There are 2 karana's made up of eleven karana's for the waxing moon or shukula Paksha and 2 karana's made up of eleven karana's for Krishna Paksha.
