It does not belong to us... In western culture we are so used to taking and selling.. ....
The bowing is respect for the gift that the giver is bestowing on us.... it is much more but I think as Westerners we take and give no credit or respect to the ancient traditions....it goes so much deeper, and the depth will only come with respect, both in Yoga and Chinese martial arts..
Grace comes through the lineage.
To reach deeper and deeper levels you must be worthy, there are divine beings watching on the subtle levels, when you enter the Masters space you are automatically being watched on the subtle level. I also realize most of the people teaching yoga are not Masters, they are teaching fitness classes, so I would say just friendly respect, the kind of respect you would have for everybody and everything.....
There is a difference between a master and a regular person, these distinctions also need to be made. Practice by treating everybody with respect.. animals, trees, flowers, yourself and all that you meet... love all, respect all...serve all...
Below is an outline of Respect when receiving teaching from a lineage teacher... Master, or sacred teachings..
٭ Bow to Shifu when entering and leaving the training hall!
٭ If you are late for class, bow to join in. If you need to leave
early, tell your Instructor! This also applies to instructors who are taking classes!
٭ If you know you will be missing classes, tell your instructors in
advance. Don’t just disappear!
٭ Help to keep the school clean & tidy – when you see something that
needs doing, DO IT!
٭ Have Respect for all, including yourself.
Your martial arts training hall is a School and a
Family! Endeavour to Help and Love each other.
(As Shifu says: Respect from each other, Help from each other, Love
from each other.)
٭ Be Humble. Be Kind. Be Patient.
٭ Be open to learning, (to the teachings) and keep a positive attitude.
٭ Always try and do your best.
٭ Strive to do better, to improve, to be more successful - Persevere.
٭ Cultivate Virtue: Morality, Righteousness, Honesty, Trust, Loyalty, Courage, …
٭ Be a good person. Lead by Example!
٭ Any problems (physical, financial, emotional…) – tell
Instructor/Shifu – feel free to talk.
٭ When watching other Students and Instructors - Individuals, please
keep in mind:
Basics & Principles are the same – flavour, preference & understanding
may be different.
٭ ٭ ٭ ALWAYS BE RESPECTFU!!! ٭ ٭ ٭
